Days of a Beekeeper

Spring Feeding Status

by john speckman on 02/07/13

Looked at all Kansas yards, some needed a little sugar to keep going. Kind of hope we have another early spring like 2012... would really push the bees. Saw most of the hives bringing in pollen?? The maple or elms must be where they are getting this pollen early.

Spring 2013 Update

by john speckman on 01/31/13

Had a couple of nice days on Sunday and Monday to check our bee locations. For the most part all the colonies are in great shape, some needed a little food(sugar) to help them from starvation.

With the current weather we are having done,,, those girls are really getting a shock from the warm weekend, oh well.... hopefully we will start getting some warmer days in Feb..

Have been busy building alot of new equipment to place in service this year, or to replace some equipment that needs to be retired.

Hope to start our spring project of queen rearing by the last week of March, if the weather is more stable.

getting ready for spring

We just returned from the American Honey Producers annual meeting in San Diego, Ca... allways interesting to attend these meeting, learning something new... Alot of research being done on the impact of GMO crops and pesticides on honey bee health...

Winter Prep.

by john speckman on 11/20/12

Winter feeding is about done, have about 50-75 hives to do a final feeding this week. Starting to move the bees from our outyards back into the Kansas City area for the winter. Alot easier to keep track of the bees when they are closer to home.

More Feeding Needed for Winter

by john speckman on 11/01/12

Due to the drought conditions, looks like the bees are going to be needing more additional feed to make it thru the long winter. Have been feeding bees for the last couple of weeks, looks like we still need to feed another round to about 100 colonies... better heavy hives, then light ones, and then they would need additional feed in early 2013... Based on what we have seen, 90% of our colonies are in great shape, looked a some this week, and the queens are still laying in some of them. This will help with some more young bees to go thru the winter with.
