Days of a Beekeeper
Year End
by john speckman on 11/12/13
All the honey has been extracted, and is currently being stored in 55 gallon drums. Now the next project is melting the cappings into wax cakes to be sent to supplier for exchange of equipment. We should be able to get around 150 + pounds of beeswax after all has been melted.
Production was less than we had hoped for, but better then some of the other beekeepers in area, just thankful for what we have gotten.
Also preparing to create a powerpoint presentation for the 2014 Amercian Beekeeping Federation meeting in Baton Rouge this winter (Jan 2014).
Honey Harvest is on...
by john speckman on 08/18/13
Have been real busy since the first of July ,trying to remove all the clover honey from the bee hives before they start to collect the fall wildflower honey. It is looking like we are on track for at least a average honey flow for Kansas, some are doing way better than others,,, but thankful for what the bees have done so far.
Update status for summer of 2013
by john speckman on 07/21/13
It has been a very busy summer with the bees, they had a real slow start with the cooler and wet spring, but after mid June they really started putting up quite a bit of clover honey. We have started to extract the 2013 crop of honey, and it is really quite light in color, and has a wonderful taste. We have started stocking our stores with this years crop, as well as some of the finest "Cut Comb" honey you will find.
We have started moving some of our colonies to new locations to hopefully gather another crop of soybean honey, then some fall honey for them to use during the winter for feed.
Spring 2013 updates
by john speckman on 05/15/13
Has been a real busy couple of weeks, the bees have really started with the increased population with all the warm weather finally.. Have made about 125 new hives for this years honey production, and have been able to help some other beekeepers with some frames of bees to help them build up their counts also.
Have start (2) sets of new queens, the first bunch had a rough time will all the cool weather, but just setup another group of 18 queen cells this week, and 14 cells in starter nucs last week. Looks like they are finally bringing in some extra nectar which is a good thing, as they have been using up their surplus stores raising more bees.
Have started to put on honey supers in advance of the sweet clover flow, which normally starts the 1st week of June or so. Have alot of new frames/foundation that needs to be drawn out to comb, so will put these on in hopes they will fill with honey.
